Traveling from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in just 57 minutes will soon be a reality, thanks to Etihad Rail’s latest passenger train service. Set to operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h, the service will dramatically cut down the typical two-hour drive time between the two cities.
Etihad Rail has revealed the travel durations for its passenger routes across the UAE, with a journey from Abu Dhabi to Al Ruwais taking just 70 minutes, despite a 240 km distance. Additionally, a trip from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah will take 105 minutes, connecting key regions like Sharjah and Al Dhaid.
This state-of-the-art rail network will connect 11 cities and regions, spanning from Al Sila to Fujairah. The rail authority has already announced two key stations: one in Sakamkam, Fujairah, and the other in Sharjah, University City.
Although the official launch date for the passenger service remains pending, Etihad Rail is expected to serve approximately 36.5 million passengers annually. In January 2024, UAE residents got their first glimpse of the sleek trains in operation between Abu Dhabi and Al Dhannah, with images and videos showcasing the modern design of the high-speed service.
The trains will feature comfortable grey seating in a 2+2 format, similar to airline seating classes. Each compartment is equipped with electric doors and TV screens that display location and arrival information, ensuring a comfortable travel experience.
Etihad Rail’s passenger service will pass through major cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai, as well as scenic destinations like Fujairah’s mountains and the Liwa desert. The project is part of the UAE’s Dh50 billion Railways Programme, which was launched in December 2021. This initiative is the largest integrated transport system in the country, linking key cities and supporting economic growth by providing over 9,000 jobs in the railway sector by 2030.
Freight services have already commenced in 2023, with Etihad Rail operating one of the most modern freight fleets in the region, capable of transporting 60 million tons of goods annually across the UAE.
As the rail service prepares for the launch of its passenger operations, Etihad Rail recently revealed a rebranded logo inspired by the eye of a falcon, symbolizing agility, precision, and a commitment to reaching long-term goals.
The UAE Railways Programme promises to revolutionize travel and trade across the Emirates, setting the stage for a new era of transport connectivity.
