Dubai is kicking off 2025 with a major eco-friendly change! From January 1, single-use plastic items like Styrofoam cups, plastic straws, and table covers will be banned. This means noticeable changes in your daily life, whether you’re sipping a coffee or ordering takeout.
What’s Being Banned?
Under the new rules, these single-use plastic items are not allowed anymore:
- Styrofoam cups and food containers
- Plastic straws and stirrers
- Plastic cotton swabs
- Plastic table covers
This ban builds on Dubai’s earlier step of banning single-use plastic bags in June 2024.
The Bigger Picture
The ban is part of Dubai’s plan, led by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to reduce plastic waste and promote reusable and recyclable products. The gradual rollout started with a small charge on plastic bags last year, making it easier for businesses and residents to adjust. By January 2026, the ban will include more items like plastic cups, lids, plates, and cutlery.
